India architecture is a beautiful amalgamate of various structures evolved during course of time. Different Kingdoms, dynasties, rulers, their cultures and religions have impacted and made lot of addition to it.

One of oldest Architecture in India was established during Buddhism at time of Indian Emperor Ashoka. Buddhist architecture is based on 3 elements basically in form of The Chaitya Hall - Place of Worship, The Vihara - Monastery and The Stupa - Hemispherical Mound for Memory. Notable mentions are : The Great Stupa at Sanchi, Mahabodhi Temple at Bodhgaya, rock cut caves at Ajanta in Maharashtra.

Hindu Architecture Temples built in different style as per religious belief and location. In South India, rock-cut temples of Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram, Temples at Thanjavur, Belur and Halebid shows excellence in architectural patterns of that time. In North India, style of temples are based on Nagara style with boundaries and steps leading up to main centre, Khajuraho Temples in Central India - a Unesco World Heritage Site and known for erotic sculptures are visited by many tourists each year. When Muslim rulers came, they developed Indo-Islamic Architecture, a mixture of Hindu and Islamic style.

During British era, colonial style architecture was spread into many part of India. Major and important sites can be seen in Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi. Some magnificent work can be seen as : Lutyens Delhi including President House, Parliament of India, India Gate, Victoria Memorial in Kolkata, Mumbai high court and Gateway of India - Mumbai, Fort St. John - Chennai.
